This suede bracelet embracing a sterling silver cross, while seemingly contemporary, has a long history.

The form has been adapted from the Cross of St Cuthbert, a masterpiece of the Anglo-Saxon jewelers art, dating back to around the 7th century AD. It was made in Northumbria, and ancient kingdom now part of the north-east of England and southern Scotland, and was found among the relics of St Cuthbert in the nineteenth century.

St Cuthbert was a monk, hermit and Bishop of Lindisfarne, the place of origin was the famous illuminated manuscript, the Lindisfarne Gospels. In early medieval times he was the most popular of the English saints, noted for his piety and austerity. Though he died in AD 687 his shrine was repeatedlly moved to protect it from the Viking invasions of the time, before reaching his final resting place in Durham Cathedral in 1104.

The unusual shape of the cross has been rendered into an undulating organic modern form, in a softly finished sterling silver and wrapped in ribbons of suede.
